Windows 7 Rumor 982,479,274,983th.

(Follow me on Twitter: msftkitchen)

Our sometimes overly-creative friends over at The Inquirer are reporting that DirectX 11 is being nixed from Windows 7 due to the complaints of one MAJORLY influential-yet-unnamed company. Their supposed complaint? The inability to adapt to the creation and implementation of freshly-developed technology. Go figure. I’m not so sure I’m convinced with this one, though. The Inquirer is making it sound like it’s some great loss that Windows 7 will not have an advancement as GREAT as DirectX 11 (erm, someone do me a favor and find me the plans for DX 11 so that we can discern just what the implied loss would be, please) but I can’t help sitting here and pondering the GOOD that might come about by allowing developers and hardware vendors to fine-tune the freshly-baked DX 10.* (see: playing catch-up, and no, I don’t mean the yummy tomato product that makes your fries and burgers del.icio.us)! Eeeeeveryone wants the latest and greatest and certainly Microsoft doesn’t want to rest on their laurels and let their development of cutting-edge technology fall by the wayside, so if this one is true, then I’m fairly sure Microsoft will be able to take an advantage of it by continuing to develop their DirectX technology and have something great ready to slap into the next whatever they decide to slap it into. Or something. Yeah, that’s it.

Anywho, seeing is believing and with people being able to pull off the LOOKS of the DX10 version of Crysis using DX9-ONLY cfg hacks (yes, yes, I know DX10 is about optimization and conservation of memory, etc.), I am of the belief that Microsoft can CERTAINLY pull off an amazing user interface for Windows 7 WITHOUT the need of the next generation of DirectX. Heck, just think about what all they wanted to accomplish (and very well could have, mind you) in Longhorn even with DX 9 back in the day! Windows is a Microsoft product. DirectX is a Microsoft product. Hello!? McFly!? I’m *preeeeetty sure* Microsoft can pull off exactly what they want to accomplish with their next-gen UI and UX in Windows WITHOUT having to cook up the next-gen DirectX product.

Final Verdict: Even if this rumor is true, I say BIG FREAKIN’ DEAL! I’m DEFINITELY not convinced that a DirectX 11-less Windows 7 is such a bad thing. Manufacturers, whine away! Results? DirectX 10 finally gets its day in the sun, developers get to have a field day, hardware prices drop (unless gpu manufacturers stay greedy and follow the business model of the selling of compact discs), thus making consumers happy campers, annnnd finally, SteveSi appears less and less like an angry, fire-breathing dragon to his hoard of Microsoft minions. Mwah ha ha ha! I mean, *cough, cough*.

EDIT: As I read the article from The Inquirer again, I can’t help but sit here and make a funny dorky-looking face and say out loud, “*Der her her*! Microsoft is already cutting features! Oh noes! *Der, her, her*!” I mean, that guy makes it seem like it’s some cardinal sin for Microsoft to… shhh, whisper this quietly… *plan their product and make…* *GASP…* decisions to… change things!? HOLY CRAP, MICROSOFT IS INTERNALLY CHANGING INTERNAL PLANS! AHHHHH!!! lol. With Windows 7 being released circa 2nd-half 2009 at the EARLIEST, I’d say the chopping of undocumented, non-public and non-developed (or under-developed at the most) features at the Milestone 1 phase bears little merit to be compared to the butchering of Longhorn Client/Vista pre-reset, but… that’s just my opinion.

Windows 7 M1: Yet to fall into the right hands…

(Follow me on Twitter: msftkitchen)

Okay, so I’m definitely a little annoyed now at the people who seem to be getting their hands on this build. Between shoddy video and less-than-enthralling write-ups, the latest blogger to take a stab at the proverbial Windows 7 M1 cake is “JayDog” who used TGDaily.com as his catalyst. I am truly baffled by the lack of interest and intelligence displayed by people like “JayDog” who seem to have no idea just what they have their hands on. If you’re going to write a review or give your opinion on something like, oh, I don’t know… THE MILESTONE ONE BUILD OF WINDOWS F*****G SEVEN, please have some semblance of an idea of what you’re talking about and things to look for. At the very least, there are a few things to be salvaged from his mockery of a write-up:

- The Windows 7 DVD image weighs in at 2.7GB.
- Apparently, the install of Windows 7 is upgrade-only and must be installed over a Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 install.
- The Windows Experience Index needs to be adjusted manually, for whatever that may entail.
- M1 installs automatically as a dual-boot install, so you can either boot into Windows Vista Ultimate or Windows 7 Ultimate when you start your computer.

I dig the dual-boot thing, personally but I hope, hope, hope this build finds its way into the hands of someone who can do a MUCH more involved write-up. I mean, with gems such as this…

“You can dig around more in the technicalities of Windows 7, but I was not able to discover anything especially interesting here either.”

… You can rest assured “JayDog” leaves a LOT to be desired and ultimately (no pun intended) discovered.

The first thing I would do is look for everything MSBob spoke of in his extended comment he posted on Long Zheng’s blog but that would just make a little too much sense, now, wouldn’t it? Would anyone be willing to share the build with me so I can write something that is of actual interest and substance, PLEASE? *sigh*

To Whom It May Concern:

Hello, everyone! I have been receiving a large number of emails with people asking me why I’m not posting content continuously. I would like to address a few issues and dispel any theories some of you may have:

Q: Do you work for Microsoft? It seems to me you’re internal…

A: No, I do not. I have a 9-6 technical support job and run this site solely as a hobby.

Q: Where do you get your information from, then?

A: Very few trusted friends know who from and how I obtain my information. Unfortunately for all who are interested in my site, my obtaining of information comes and goes in waves. I don’t believe in posting filler, so if I get a hold of something I don’t deem worthy of posting, I won’t. Likewise, I don’t have the time to keep up with the plethora of other credible sites out there with the exception of a few in particular but I definitely don’t have the time and interest in regurgitating their information. Therefor, I encourage you to visit the links at the bottom of the page for the sites I have listed as they are the few I personally keep up with and would be reiterating information from if I were to.

Q: Well then, aren’t you worried about losing readers?

A: I wish I could say that everyone was like me in that, regardless of the quantity of information, if the quality is consistently unique and worthy of my time, I will always be a reader of the site containing said information. If the frequency of my posting is something that drives you away, all I can say is that I post information when I get a hold of it! I’m just a normal guy vesting his personal time and energy into finding and relaying information to all of you! I’m out not for the most hits or the highest popularity on the web.

All I ask for from all of you is your patience. Trust me; if I could push out fresh content every single day, I absolutely would! Between my job, my other hobbies, my business endeavors and whatever else I have going on, this site becomes my priority as soon as I get a hold of information that I know you all will appreciate! I promise all of you that I will absolutely bring to you everything I can as soon as I can.

Thanks again for your time and patience, everyone. I look forward to the next big scoop or dose of unique information I can provide you with! =)
