Short: Windows 7 SP1 Demo Installer Screen Shots Leak

Microsoft news website Muy Windows has just posted screen shots of a Windows 7 SP1 Demo Installer, thus bringing its completion closer to fruition. Here are a few of them, but there are more at the source, linked beneath the pictures below. I can’t help but wonder just what all they plan on fixing in SP1. Windows 7 has been absolutely fantastic for me. Are there any problems in particular any of you out there are having that you hope are fixed? Check out the shots:

  • Only problem I have is with older games. Starcraft and Diablo/II mainly. I know they only run 256 colors, but I think the problem I have is the Superbar likes to force its way to the top, and makes the colors all out of wack. Oh well. Windows 7 is great otherwise!

  • Dan:

    The Superbar is forced to “Always on top” and you cannot override this behavior through the UI anymore. You can hexedit the Explorer prefs in the registry to turn it off, but window previews are on the same z-order as the taskbar (hence it is easy to see why it is forced on).

  • FWIW, we’ve found & reported a few API bugs. I’ll be surprised if anything we’ve reported is fixed in SP1, though. Some of the stuff we reported when Vista came out still isn’t fixed (and any fixes that were made had to wait three years for Win 7).

    (I’ve also noticed a load of cosmetic issues, plus some bugs in Explorer, but not bothered to report any of them as they’re fairly minor. They make the OS look unpolished but I can’t see them being fixed when MS, for better or worse, are terrified of making small fixes in case it accidentally triggers a bigger problem.)

    @Dan:

    Another superbar/on-top issue is if you have Aero off (via Remote Desktop at least) and a 3rd party toolbar docked above it (which happens to me when the toolbar on my second monitor migrates to the primary when using Remote Desktop). The taskbar’s window-button pop-up menus appear *behind* the toolbar so you cannot see or click on the first window of any group.

  • I can’t get over the watermarks. I know they want to protect their pics from not being credited, but… oy vey!

  • I only hope they give back the great Bluetooth support, that VISTA had, but was taken away in the WIN 7 RC.

  • doug_jnr:

    There is sure to be thousands of others as WIN7 is just so mind blowingly complex.

  • I’m about to buy a new PC and have the option to have windows 7 or XP on there. Was going to go with 7 but not 100% sure I should now after doing a bit of research. Is it really as bad as I’m hearing?
