Exclusive: Services for Windows 7 and Beyond
Expanding on the Realtime Communications (RTC) demo I wrote about a number of months ago (demo can be viewed here), “Software plus Services” is Microsoft’s latest in where the future lies. Seeing it as the Windows OS is the driving force behind so much (Windows Mobile, Windows Client, Windows Server, etc.), I find this video to be directly related to Microsoft’s future vision of their OS. Contained in this video are prototypes of hardware, GUI’s, services, and something I am personally really digging on the most just because I think it’s awesome: The OS prototype used in the architect’s table! (Are there any architects out there reading this right now?) Is this a Windows 7 initiative or is this beyond? Either way, I like Microsoft’s vision of seamless data handling.
I’m not so sure I like the idea of no more Windows Explorer but Microsoft has been prototyping taskbarless GUI’s like this for years, so I’m going to bet my money on Windows 7 or, at the latest, Windows 8 being explorer-less as we know it. Heck, who would have thought at the time that this video would actually come to fruition as MCE, live picture frames, etc.? Regardless of what the true plan is for Windows 7 and beyond, here is Microsoft’s vision (dated 2007 in the video) of the world with “Software plus Services”:

I don’t really get the idea behind “software + services”. Shouldn’t a software be the service and a service is always some kind of software.
Wouldn’t it be better, if we do not have to deal with software but just get the services? For example: Google Mail. You never ever have to worry about where to get it, update to the latest version and so on. It’s just a service.

The UI’s look good, but too heavy on the animations. It reminds me of the early LH UI prototypes.
It’s just a future vision video, not a preview of anything specific.
Is it possible to watch thoses videos ? Because they’re not available anymore. Thanks.
